Windsor Part 2. The Backstreets.

These are pubs that are off the tourist run. Almost only used by local customers on a regular basis, they welcome casual visitors and offer a completely different experience to the tourist pubs near the castle. Distance 0.6 miles, walking time 13 min.

Duke of ConnaughtStart at the Duke of Connaught. 165 Arthur Rd SL4 1RZ Opening 4-11 Mon-Wed; 12.30-2, 4-11 Thu & Fri; 12-Midnight Sat; 12-11 Sun.  From the main station, leave by the side exit near the Queen locomotive and go down the stairs to the very bottom or use the lift. Take a left down Goswell road, turn right to Arthur road. Really good Thai food available in this pleasant traditional pub. Served 6-10 Mon & Tue; 12-2.30, 6-10; no food Sun. Green King plus local ales. Originally No.1 Connaught Cottages, this pub was the home of Charles Wilkins, a beer retailer in 1895.

Turn right from the pub and walk along Bexley road to the crossroads. Turn left into Alma road to see the Copper Horse on your right.

Very much a locals pub with a friendly atmosphere, more like a social club than a pub.
Not many real ales but plenty of kegs and lagers. A big pub with plenty of room to sit.

From the Copper Horse turn left down Alma Road and keep on until it meets Clarence Road. Turn left and you will soon see the Crosses Corner and the Criterion.

To reach walk 3: Turn left out of the pub down Victoria Street. Turn right when you reach Sheet Street and walk down to where the road splits. Keep left into Kings road and you will see the Windsor Castle pub on your right with the 'Long Walk' on your left.
