Windsor Part 1. Around the Castle.

These pubs that are near Windsor Castle, the main tourist area. They are busy pubs and most offer very good beers and lovely food. Distance 0.3 miles, walking time 7 min.

The King and CastleStart at the King and Castle. 15-16 Thames Street  SL4 1PL. Opens for breakfast, food served all day. Turn left out of the railway station and the pub is down the hill on your left.
A large Wetherspoon pub opposite the Castle with three floors.This former long-standing chemist shop became a pub in 1967. From 1992, it was called the Olde King and Castle. The 'King' refers to the bust of Edward VII above the entrance to the adjacent passageway, where there is an engraving of Windsor Castle. Free Wifi.

Turn right out of the pub and walk up to the hill in front of the castle. The Horse and Groom is on the right.

The cellar extends under the road on castle hill ending with an arch which was originally a passage leading to the castle, but at some point was filled in. 6 changing beers.

Turn right out of the pub and walk down Market Street to the Carpenters Arms.

A good range of ales in this large pleasant pub with a good friendly atmosphere. The cellars have many passages that lead to Windsor Castle which were used until the early 19th Century but have now been bricked up. Built in 1518. Voted local pub of the year several times.

Children not allowed in the pub. Lunch is served from noon daily and you are advised to book.
01753 855 426.  Dinner Mon - Thur only, 6:30 - 10pm  Small, cosy, wood panelled 17th Century inn, close to the Cambridge Gate entrance to Windsor Great Park.
There is not much seating for drinkers only at lunchtimes , most tables are used for diners who have booked. Afternoons and evenings are usually more roomy. This is a great pub, so do not miss it.
